AI and websites

Can AI really manage and improve a business website?

Short answer: partly, yes. Full answer: it depends what you mean by “manage”. AI is useful for repetitive website jobs. It is much less reliable when the work needs context about your market, your customers, and your commercial priorities.

Why this question matters now

Most small teams do not struggle because they lack ideas. They struggle because website improvements compete with everything else in the week. That is one of the reasons I started building Sitewell in the first place, as I explained in why I built Sitewell.

If AI can take care of some of that routine work, great. But treating AI as a full replacement for a clear website strategy is where people get into trouble.

What AI can automate well

In my experience, AI is strongest when the task is bounded and repeatable. Things like spotting obvious metadata gaps, drafting first-pass content updates, highlighting thin pages, or turning raw checks into a tidy action list are fair game.

That sort of support reduces admin and speeds up execution. It can also help teams stay consistent, which is often half the battle with SEO and ongoing website maintenance.

Where human judgement is still non-negotiable

AI does not run your business. It does not know your margins, your sales process, or why one enquiry is worth ten others. So it cannot make the final call on page priorities, positioning, offers, or trade-offs between short-term leads and long-term brand direction.

It also cannot be trusted blindly on factual claims. If the output includes invented specifics, exaggerated promises, or generic copy that sounds plausible but says very little, you still need a human editor to catch and correct that before it goes live.

The mistake I see most often

The common mistake is assuming automation removes the need for decisions. It does not. It just changes where your effort should go: less time formatting and collecting, more time deciding what matters.

That is why I think a mixed model works best for most businesses: automate the repeatable layer, then keep human review for priorities, accuracy, and commercial sense.

How this is shaping Sitewell

My goal is not to pretend AI can run everything on autopilot. The aim is to make useful website improvement work easier to run every week, while still keeping decisions in human hands.

I have shared more about that product direction in how I am building automated website optimisation into Sitewell.

Practical next step

If you are exploring AI for your website, start small. Pick one repetitive workflow, automate the first pass, and keep review standards high. If you want help designing that process in a practical way, feel free to get in touch.
